Yoga is a pathway to wellness of body, mind and spirit no matter what your age, or physical limitations may be. Our gentle yoga and chair classes are designed for mid-life, 50+ and older adults, and seniors. Classes are adapted to meet the needs of every body regardless of limitations. Our mission is to spread the message that the wonderful health and wellness benefits of yoga can be accessible to every human being - even if you may have limited mobility or range of motion due to surgery, inactivity or age.
While we cannot prevent getting older, becoming less active as we age can be a choice. Health conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, and osteoporosis can impact balance, muscle strength, range of motion and flexibility. A practice of daily stretching and gentle yoga movements increases flexibility, improves balance, strengthens muscles and joints, helping to manage these chronic conditions. Yoga can also improve breathing, help you gain more energy and vitality, along with adding a sense of calmness to your life!
Incorporating a yoga practice into our life can improve physical health, and enhance psychological well-being. We live in a fast paced world that can be overwhelming - self awareness through meditative and mindfulness practice provides a way to ease anxiety, reduce stress, decrease tension in the body, improve sleep patterns, calm and focus the mind and improve concentration and memory at any age. Yoga helps us to become more aware of how our mind, body and inner spirit are connected, bringing a sense of empowerment, calm and peace.

A message from Founder: Vivien F. Green.
" Having more than a decade of experience working with older adults and being older myself - I understand the limitations we all experience as we age – I believe that yoga should be accessible to every human being; it is a way to look deeper into ourselves, and become more aware of how our Mind, Body and inner Spirit are connected, and to find inner happiness and peace.
Prior to establishing Gentle Yoga of NC, I was a successful non-profit executive director. During my career I designed, implemented and managed life enrichment activities for active older adults aged 50+; including fitness classes, health and wellness education, yoga and meditation. It was there I found great joy in helping others find a holistic way to enhance quality of life and stay active for as long as possible.
My desire is to encourage older adults to explore the wonderful benefits of yoga, and to incorporate it into their lifestyle, regardless of age, physical limitations or level of fitness.
I currently teach yoga at retirement communities, senior centers, memory care facilities, adult day care centers, physical therapy and health & wellness centers in the Triangle, NC area.
As a teacher, I specialize in yoga for those aged 50+ and chair adapted yoga classes which are particularly beneficial for older adults, and individuals with chronic health concerns or limited range of motion due to injury, surgery or age.
No special clothing, equipment or even location is necessary. Yoga can be done by everyone, regardless of age, fitness level, physical condition or level of mobility!"
